ALECI

We bring together expertise from diverse fields to drive meaningful change

The Aqua Lab Ecosystems Conservation Index (ALECI) is a system designed to quantify, verify, and monetize ecosystem services, aiming to transform conservation from a cost into a value. It does this by issuing conservation credits based on field-based monitoring, recording, and verification (MRV) of ecosystem performance across seven service domains: biomass, oxygen production, water purification, microclimate & cooling effect, soil organic matter (SOM), water retention, and biodiversity.

ALECI methodological approach

ALECI is one of the most integrated, ecological-function-centered MRV + valuation frameworks available. It is scientifically credible, economically interpretable, and operationally applicable for evaluating and valuing ecosystems at landscape scale globally. Its market alignment makes it especially powerful for credit-based conservation financing and performance-based ecological restoration.

ALECI uses tried and tested methodological and scientific approaches to validate many indices of ecosystem productivity (services)  using primary DATA from a given landscape and habitat type. ALECI uses indicators to identify boundaries of identified points along theprocess of ‘ecological succession’ as a primary indicator of landscape sustainability, and very specific structural indicators of Biomass that measure the baseline and the physiognomic structure of the landscape being evaluated. ALECI addresses the fact that there has not been given any relative market value to the design and establishment of ‘ecological succession’ in order to guarantee the survivability & adaptations of native Biodiversity, the creation of specialized habitat, and increase the accumulation of  Photosynthetic Biomass which is the primary driver of sustainability and ecosystem function on terrestrial landscapes.

The ALECI MRV (Monitoring, Recording, and Validation) and Value Setting (VS) protocol is a strong and well-structured approach for evaluating the functional capacity of landscape-based ecosystems globally. Here’s why:

Scientific and Technical Robustness

The ALECI system builds on internationally recognized frameworks and equations:

  • Biomass estimation is grounded in the widely cited allometric models and the Analog Forestry approach
  • Non-woody biomass and photosynthetic biomass are derived from peer-reviewed allometry
  • Each ecosystem service (oxygen, water purification, cooling effect, soil, biodiversity) is linked to quantitative, replicable metrics, ensuring standardized comparison across geographies.

Comprehensive MRV Architecture

  • ALECI includes baseline data, seral succession staging, biodiversity inventories, soil organic matter testing, and canopy structure profiling, following transparent field protocols .
  • The approach uses both biophysical and ecological indicators to derive ecosystem service values, minimizing reliance on abstract proxies.

Transparency and Replicability

  • All formulas are explicitly provided, with step-by-step examples and units.
  • It includes digital data sheets for each MRV component, allowing consistent monitoring across time and locations .

Conclusion

ALECI is one of the most integrated, ecological-function-centered MRV + valuation frameworks available. It is scientifically credible, economically interpretable, and operationally applicable for evaluating and valuing ecosystems at landscape scale globally. Its market alignment makes it especially powerful for credit-based conservation financing and performance-based ecological restoration.

Geotagging perimeters

  • AquaeLabs Baseline Conservation Credits — > This protocol allows a unique  composite index to be identified using the ALECI. Once baseline biodiversity assessment is concluded an AquaeLAb smart- contract is activated to ensure contractual MRV of the land area on an annual basis for 5 years. By activating these credits, the sustainability of the ecosystem and the conservation of its status is guaranteed

Ownership type : private / state

Geotagging perimeters

  • AquaeLabs Aspirational Conservation Credits — > This credit scheme rewards improvements to  the existing Biodiversity signature  based  on the  MRV  index measured on an annual basis for a minimum of 5 years as governed by the ALECI smart- contract.
  • In any given bioregion, once the  baseline biodiversity assessment is done, and foundational biodiversity credit issued, the ALECI can GUARANTEE with insurance, that this land will remain in a manner more suitable for ecological (seral) succession and therefore a financial tool for Validating aspirational conservation credits
